Abstract
This paper gives account of the research works developed between 1997 and 2001 about the processes of political education undertaken by public schools in Bogotá-Colombia. These works are concerned with the study of the public school culture and its influence in the perceptions, representations and opinions about politics and democracy hold by the teachers and students who belong to these institutions. This fact questions the way in which the school, historically speaking, has given account of the diversity and plurality of individuals but most importantly, it raises a question about the subject of the social and pedagogical theories that determined the emergence of the school as a social institution.
No.45 II SEMESTRE 2003 UNIVERSIDAD PEDAGOGICA NACIONAL Digitalizado por RED ACADEMICA Democracy in the school is a process that implies the emergence of the modern subject, its redefinition in terms of identity and representation. Nevertheless, we can say that the school could be saved by the individual, the differentiated subject who brings his/her conceptions from a wider social context, creating a tension with the institutionalized world of his/her own experience. The school needs to redefine its identity as a social institution from the perspective of pedagogical and psychological discourses, given the fact that one of the goals of modern democracy is to count on legitimate institutions which are meaningful to the subjects. Finally, it is necessary to clarify the specific place of the educative institutions within the global process of democratization in the West.
