Abstract
The research-creation that I present arises from my own interest and is framed in an autoethnographic perspective. Through this lens, I reflect on the dynamics of female discipline that I have experienced in educational institutions and how they have impacted my current life. These experiences have left a mark of fears, insecurities and internal conflicts, generating a loss of confidence and self-esteem.
To address this issue, I have created a dramaturgy and a staging titled "Watched and Punished." Through bodily and vocal expression, what we are not able to express from ourselves is enunciated since we have been taught that when we are quiet we look prettier. This experimental one-woman show uses the metaphor of the institution/prison to represent how I felt as a woman within educational institutions.
Instead of being spaces of empowerment and personal growth, the educational process can become a terrain where stereotypes and restrictive gender roles are internalized. From an early age, women face fears of being judged, of not fitting into beauty ideals, and of not meeting academic or social expectations. These fears take root in our psyche and can limit our development.
This work is important because it can be a powerful tool of resistance and transformation. By sharing and reflecting on our own experiences, we can make visible and challenge these dynamics of feminine discipline. Furthermore, we can open paths towards a more inclusive education, which promotes sensitivity, respect, diversity, and provides safe spaces where women can express themselves freely.
