Abstract
This research is interpretative and seeks to approach the construction of identity among some artisan weavers of the Cubaque Contreras family and other weavers who are associated with the family and reside in the municipality of Tocancipá. This town is currently recognized as an industrial zone, but through life narratives, this family and their acquaintances describe how in ancient times this territory had sheep farms. Living in the town at that time meant that families took on roles as wool merchants, weavers, spinners, etc., in order to meet the needs of that era.
The reader should be aware that the research focused on how identity is constructed, taking into account different perspectives from which this concept can be studied. Subsequently, the distinctive traits required for a subject to be regarded as an artisan weaver were defined. Based on this information, the aim was to identify these aspects in the life narratives of the family and acquaintances. As a result of this process, it becomes evident how the practice of artisan weaving has managed to stay alive to this day, thanks to its intergenerational teaching and the emotional connections forged with family and the practice itself.
