Among novel and eroticism : desire, body and subjectivizing of the intellectual woman in Delta en la Soledad.eng
After the death of the dictator Juan Vicente Gómez (December, 1935). and as a consequence of a series of imaginary movements that Venezuela had suffered in the decade of the 1930s, the high culture saw the necessity to design a nation project in appearance inclusive, peaceable and modernizer, that legitimized the country and its speech to face the western glance. In this attempt, the intellectuals who were in favor of modernity found the difficulty of constructing a hero -virile, heterosexual, racially mixed and cultivated-who, at the same time of managing to get progress and development for his surroundings, silenced any expression related to the war, the irrationality or the animality, as good as it could be the body, the sex or the desire. Then, at the same time, as a process of domestication of the national hero, a number of elements arose inside different high culture expressions: several "sexual" elements from the conduct and the national writing, which located the black or indigenous man in the space of the irrationality and the sexual power; and the woman, in the space of the platonic lave, the innocence and the reproductive capacity. In the meantime, the racially mixed and cultivated man was assigned the aptitude to organize the nation from the purest rationality. As might have been expected, there was a massive response from the feminine intellectuality, which refused to accept that new exclusion. One of the clearest examples of this phenomenon is the short stories book Delta en la soledad (1946), where the authoress deals with a group of prohibited topics inside the high culture -like the sexuality, the incest, the rapes and the sexualizing of the feminine body- in the meantime she clarifies her opposite ethical, aesthetic and political attitude.eng
